Dr. Dawit Haile

Dr. Dawit Haile is a Computer Science and Mathematics professor at Virginia State University (VSU). He serves as the Dean of the College of Engineering and Technology and interim Provost for Academic Affairs. Over the past three decades, he has made significant contributions in both industry and academia, including previous appointments at Xavier University and Southern Illinois University. During his tenure as chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Dr. Haile introduced undergraduate and graduate programs in computer science and bolstered its research capabilities in diverse areas such as machine learning, data mining, and cyber security.
Dr. Haile’s dedication to excellence has earned him many accolades, including a prestigious Bank of America Outstanding Faculty award. His research interests encompass many topics, including combinatorics, graph theory, neural networks, and data mining. He has published journal research articles, contributed book chapters, and chaired various conferences. He has secured over $25 million in grant awards to support his research and project endeavors. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing and chairs the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Logistics Systems board. He is appointed to the Commonwealth & Manufacturing Development Commission to serve a third consecutive four-year term. Dr. Haile is affiliated with the American Society for Engineering Education, the American Mathematical Society, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.
Dr. Haile earned a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Southern Illinois University, a master’s degree in computer science from Virginia Commonwealth University, and a master’s in mathematics from Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia. He resides in Chester, Virginia, with his wife and two children.
